A Guide to Living Life Fully

Accepting Vulnerability

Accepting Vulnerability

“When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability… To be alive is to be vulnerable.”Madeleine L’Engle

We all learn as we grow; some of these lessons are painful, both in how we learn them and what they mean for the future. Some lessons never seem to fully set in, even if we know better, we can just never shake our bad habits. Although I learned this lesson the hard way and truly feel there is no other way to fully accept it, it was recently put into words for me that I could truly comprehend. I am still struggling to put it into practice.

In order to live all the days of your life, as the May You Live mantra insists, one must fully embrace that life. There is no way to cut out a portion of oneself while leaving the rest. All of the inadequacies, fears, vulnerabilities, and doubts go hand in hand with all the strength, joy, love, and significance. If fact, as researched by Dr. Brené Brown, love is born from vulnerability.

“We cultivate love when we allow our most vulnerable and powerful selves to be deeply seen and known, and when we honor the spiritual connection that grows from that offering with trust, respect, kindness and affection.”

She goes on to highlight that it can be really difficult to accept our complete selves; however, it is not nearly as difficult as life without joy, belonging, and love. Essentially, only when we are courageous enough to accept our vulnerabilities and realize that we are still worthy individuals, will we truly experience the good life has to offer.

When being at ease with vulnerability becomes fundamental, you have reached the promise land. I am not advocating letting people take advantage of you but you must be willing to take the first step because you know you are worth it. Tell someone else that you love them first, don’t sweat your entrance exam scores between the time the test is over and you are waiting on the results, and be comfortable with yourself.

May you live all the days of your life.
