The Best

The Best

“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have been searching for something I enjoy so much that I could become the best at it—so good that there is no chance that I would be surpassed as long as I was still in the game. I wanted to be what Tony Hawk is to skateboarding, Shawn White is to snowboarding, and Kelly Slater is to surfing. Don’t get me wrong; it didn’t have to be a board sport—it could be anything from business to the arts to sports. As long as I was damn good, kept getting better (not necessarily easily), and enjoyed it.

At that point, passion would simply lead to hitting it big. I am not talking mega stardom, like the individuals above, but a lifestyle that I could thrive in. Where people could easily recognize that this thing, activity, or business was my calling.

Well, I have been good at things in my life and more often than not, I am not bad at things. Unfortunately, I have never enjoyed anything so much that I was incapable of taking my focus off it. Raw talent certainly helps in becoming the best but it is really the persistent passionate pursuit that makes someone the best. To my dismay, I have never found that captivating subject that drives me to unrelenting lengths.

This morning, I was writing my girlfriend an email and had an epiphany. As I tried again to fill the gap I left in her life by leaving on a several month European adventure (like a joyful worker perpetually shoveling earth into a trench with walls that continue to erode), I realized I am the best and continually getting better at one thing that I enjoy beyond words. Loving her.

Well, I hit it big and that is an understatement (no, she is not my sugar momma). She makes me want to thrive in life, to be better all the time, to provide a place she can thrive too, to lead a life worth living. She is the thing I am the best at, my enjoyment, the catalyst to make me better, the stage for all that is to come, and so much more.

I won’t be a red carpet celebrity by being the best at loving her but people will recognize that it is my calling. It is simple to see that this passion will provide the structure of my future. As long as I am permitted to be at her side, I will continue to work at becoming better because she is the subject I am incapable of losing interest in.

May you live all the days of your life.
