A Guide to Living Life Fully

Earning 30

Earning 30

Jul 4, 2012

Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat it, and when you sleep, really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell, and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”William Saroyan

I am turning 27 this month; therefore, I only have three measly years until I am no-longer “20-something” and officially transition into the crisis filled realm of “middle-age”. In other words, I am old and constantly getting older.

However, my good buddy Jake Berton was telling me about an epiphany he had proposing a reevaluation of aging—as we hit those big age milestones, whether it be 30, 40, 50, or any age really, we think about it as earning the year instead of having it thrust upon you by Father Time.

This philosophy is two-fold, first who are we to complain about being fortunate enough to have spent more time with our friends, family, and loved ones enjoying all the wondrous experiences this past year has afforded us. Death catches-up to us all eventually and I personally hope all of us are given ample time to live prior. Reinforced by that point, we should earn the next year of our lives (or milestone age) by fully living. Remember the mantra, “may you live”—well, this is exactly what it is talking about.

Now more than ever, as I being to earn 30, I will focus on really striving to live. Because I do not “only have three measly years until I am no-longer ‘20-something,’” instead I have three years of pushing the limits, new dawns, lingering kisses, breathtaking views, hilarious memories, long walks, and everything else afforded to me by more time.

I implore you to earn your time too. As the old saying goes, “if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.”

May you live all the days of your life.
